The other day I was in the Apple Store and was just about to get an Airport Express. I have an old original graphite base station and really wanted to get rid of some clutter. The Airport Express is so much smaller, and for my small home, it will cover me just fine. I decided to buy it later, as I was too busy to be bothered with the install and setup. Then, in iTunes, I saw a deal, 30 free songs with the purchase of one. So I took them up on the offer. There were three envelopes in the box, assuming each was a coupon for 10 songs, I just left them in the box for the time being. Anyway, turns out they sent me 90 free songs in total. I am not sure this is a mistake, or just a hidden nicety they are doing for everyone, needless to say, the girlfriend should think my little surprise gift is even cooler now.
When I started this blog, I really had no idea where I was going with it, and to be honest, I still have not really developed a plan. If I had to narrow down a “focus” to it, I would have to say it is pretty much a big huge rant, leaning on the technical and Mac side of the fence. One thing I was committed to with the blog was to not follow the trends of others and re-hash whatever is on the major news and blog sites for that day.
Reddit | Digg | Del.icio.usI was reading Gus Mueller’s blog and stumbled upon the musical baton and thought I just *had* to join in.
Reddit | Digg | Del.icio.us“Negative Ghostrider, the patter in full”. I know, lame, but it’s a line from Top Gun that has just stuck with me over the years. Every time I read blog maverick, it just comes to mind, and it did again with Mark Cuban’s latest post about the RIAA and yahoo.com’s new music service. The guy writes some fair stuff, I just don’t always agree with him, and this happens to be one of those cases.
Reddit | Digg | Del.icio.usWhen I can lend a hand, I try to do so. A while back, DrunkenBlog made a call for some mirrors. Of course, since I could, I obliged. In case you have been living under a rock, The Drunk has one of the best breakdowns of the seriously shady stuff Maui X-Stream have been pulling off. In a nutshell, they are taking open source software, wrapping it up in a pretty package, and selling it off as their own. If you have a spare week, give it a read, it’s really good. Anyway, since I provided a mirror DB has graciously allowed me bragging rights to my own personal desktop image, w00t!.

I just had a little discussion with a friend in instant messenger this evening, which has motivated me to put down some thoughts on why some of my friends are such idiots. Don’t get me wrong, I generally like these guys, and in a pinch, they are pretty fun to hang out with, it’s just so frustrating to watch them manage their lives. The conversation pretty much started as usual, with the normal “what’s up” formalities all in check. Then it went a little sour.
Most of my friends are pushing thirty years old, most of them do not have what anyone reading this would consider a real job. For the sake of anonymity, lets just call this friend of mine “Tom”. For a while now, Tom has been doing freelance web design and computer repair on Windows machines. He does not seem to have any shortage of requests for this type of work. There does seem to be a shortage of motivation to accomplish this work though. Tonight, he has a fully new plan of future financial stability. Not only does he want to offer website design and PC repair, but is adding in numerous other services. To his list, we now have general graphic design, print brokering, web search marketing, marketing, identity development, the list just goes on.
Reddit | Digg | Del.icio.usA while back I put in a bid on a web shop thing for a regular client of mine. Apparently, my bid was a little too pricey, so they went with someone else. In all honesty, it was and is a complicated site, at the very least, to deliver on all the features they wanted, as a one man shop, I felt it somewhere in the “gonna take about a month” department.
This was about six months ago, finally, the site has gone live, sans about 40% of the features that I originally bid on. My client, who in turn was brokering this job for his client, was not happy. Actually, both parties were really pretty miffed. I treat my clients pretty well, I have been told I treat them too well, it’s just how I do stuff, I try to stand behind my code and deliver a bug free completed project. A good friend, Windows developer, actually tells me Mac developers give Windows developers a bad name. This kind of shows you how stuff works over there in the Windows mentality.
The pressure was on during the last phases of development, for every day the site was not live, the company was losing horrendous amounts of money. What strikes me as strange, is losses over a few days more than would have covered my end to code the site. Why they were trying to save a buck or two to begin with is just beyond me, at least on something with so much potential to hurt in the long run.
Reddit | Digg | Del.icio.usThe other day I complained about Safari, alas, I did find a solution. Today, I want to make a small point about copy and paste in Safari. We all know tables are for tabular data, so the assumption is you should be able to copy tabular data and hold the formatting.
Reddit | Digg | Del.icio.usFor as long as I can remember, there has been a camp of people who think Apple would do better to move from the PPC ship to an X86 based one. I don’t happen to be one who shares in those thoughts, then again, I really don’t know enough technically to make a solid decision one way or the other. I can tell you faster CPU’s sell better and are perceived better, regardless of how well they actually perform.
I am indeed one of those not at all happy with the latest update in the PowerMac G5 line. Yeah, the prices are a little nicer, yeah, you get a better video card and a nifty dual layer DVD drive. And hey, about friggin time, you get standard 512MB ram in the top three configs! That does not make this release less than lackluster in my opinion.
