Weezer and Foo Fighters at Oakland

It was a very last minute thing, but I just got back from Weezer and Foo Fighters. I had a slight desire to see these guys, not so much cause I was a huge fan, but because reports were calling it “Foozer”. This of course, implying that there was much duo performing going on.

To be honest, I never really got into either of these bands with as much passion as I have for others. Foo fighters get immediate respect just for the Nirvana factor, Weezer for for being rockstars second to education. I was quite surprised at how good Weezer sounded. I do not really know their stuff all that well, but to me, it sounded like they played a good mix of old and new. To be honest, it sounded damn near studio quality.

Weezer is not a flamboyant band, I would go as far as to call them humble. Then again, that was just what I was expecting, and in many ways, can respect that. I just get this sinking feeling that is a cover, and after show groupies are treated to tie me up masochist sessions with the band. But who knows, they are probably really nice guys. I definately appreciate their music more after seeing them.

There is one thing that stands out about Weezer, they love their lead guitar solo’s. That guy gives Poison a run for their money. What’s cool about it, is it is done well. Lead guitar is just kinda lame, boring, and silly if you ask me, Weezer pulls it off with style, you barely notice it is there, yet it is very much a dominant theme to almost all their tracks.

Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl is a god damn rock star. If anyone was born to play the role of a dictionary definition arena rock ball of fire, it is this guy. I swear to God, I thought he was hopped up on cocaine for the first 20 minutes. But he just kept going. My experiences with drugs like that are that you can only sustain that kind of energy for a short time, before you need a “bump”. Seeing as how he left stage only once at the end, there could not have been much “bumping” going on.

They are loud, very loud, to the point where they hit the echo limits of the arena. It was annoying, from where I was sitting, there was a Dave Grohl front and center, and one slightly less loud an tinny sounding one rear right. How he does not blow out his vocal chords is beyond me. Or maybe, basing the fragility of vocal chords on what I have seen on The Ashley Simpson show is just not good science.

I have to say, they rock, there is no denying that, for me, they just rocked a little too much. “Times Like These” just demands to be done acoustic, and I will accept nothing less. Grohl does have his finer moments, quite the comedian at times. Being the last show of their tour, on Weezer’s last song, he had six naked male strippers come out rear stage, it was disgusting, uncomfortable, and amusing. The six grease chests were a good segue (sp)? for a little rant about “hot cock”. If anyone is Jason Lee in leather pants it is Grohl.

I was disappointed on two fronts. There was less acoustic/solo stuff than I would have liked, and I kinda felt I Nirvana story was in order. I was not expecting one, but as Grohl became more and more of a story teller, I felt it was deserved. Perhaps I am just too in awe of how important Nirvana is to me, and to music in general. They defined history, Grohl was a part of it, yeah, it’s been more than 10 years, but for Christ’s sake, no one would have taken notice to them were it not for his past with Nirvana. Does anyone remember them in the beginning, not rock, not at all, kinda lame.

I almost would say Foo Fighters performance made me like them less, but I realize, that is just the show they put on. It’s nothing personal, it’s just to much yelling for me. I do like their studio stuff a lot, and with this new all acoustic CD they put out, I am sure I will jump on that train pretty soon. Hell, they guy made a stab at how copy protection did not allow him to put his own album on his damn iPod, so he gets props for that.

All in all, a good night, more eventful than most for me. Downsides… 10.00 a cup beer, bad pizza, not good hot dogs, and condiments for said hot dogs that you just know have been spit in. Oh, and to the lady behind me to the left, yes, I know you have had a few too many, and yes, I know you are into the band, but could you chill out on the fucking clap along with the kick drum. For fucks sake, even your boyfriend looked like he had enough of you. When you are annoying in a room at 100+ dB, you need to sit back, and take a fucking pill.

* Sorry for the lack of links, I am on the lappy, and a hreffing is just not fun by hand, god how I love MarsEdit, as much as I hate it.
