Why I Love Apple aka: making your way up reddit

Why I Love Apple (wired.com) got 183 points at this writing on reddit.com. Did anyone read the article, or do they just see Apple in the title, and mod it up right away? The article is garbage, 12 or so paragraphs to tell me how cool it is that a date and time field can dynamically change depending on the width of your application. Nice feature sure, but 12 paragraphs!

And almost all of Apple’s products display these touches.

It’s that one that gets me, because seriously, almost all of Apple’s applications are junk. Not so much junk as they stand alone, but junk when you compare them to what else is out there.

iChat is beaten badly by Adium. Mail.app is killed by many another email client. Aperture still poops yellow. In my opinion, Apples apps are good for beginners, and bad for anything but the most simple needs. I could rattle off a list of stuff that simply pisses me off to no end about Apple’s kit. Thing one would have a hard time arguing against, but why bother, it has all been said before.

Who cares, what I want to know is, how does Wired allow this dribble to get out there. Sure, I am a crap blogger, ranting about nonsense, but 12 paragraphs of copy on text that moves around inside a column… How is that worth 183 reddit points?

Since adium does not do video I would say that it’s not better then ichat.

When our main baseline for comparison is Windows then any form of intuitive interface starts to look like computing genius.

even Home/End keys don’t work on OS/X — how pathetic is that….

Yes the do. You just have to know how to use them. Strange that.

How about the lack of ability to expand a window to full-screen for many osx apps? How about the lack of ability to use simple keystrokes to move between buttons in a dialog?

Windows UI passed by Mac several years ago. Sure, there are a few cool apps for Mac (OmniOutliner), but most of the Gee-Wiz UI stuff you always hear about can be boiled down to cool colors and theme-like effects.

The answer is Apple fanboys :)

While I too sometimes wonder if there are vote-up bots on reddit, I have to disagree with you on this one. Specifically, I’ve been searching and searching for a nice mail client. Mail.app isn’t so great, but I haven’t yet found anything better on any platform.

Clint: The idea is that it’s pointless to make windows full screen as long as you can see everything, so applications tell the window manager how big they need to be to show their entire contents. And Mac OS has complete keyboard control; you just have to turn it on in the system preferences.

Anyways, I could rattle off a bunch of things that’re nicer about Mac OS than Windows or Linux, but it’s late and you’d just call me a zealot, so… ta ta…

Yeah, what are the many better email clients than Mail? I’d really love to find something that is better…

consider the comments may be more worthwhile than the article.

“Yeah, what are the many better email clients than Mail?”

Here’s the one for me:

Articles like this just reinforce our belief in Apple. You don’t “get it,” which is fine. We didn’t ask you to “get it.” People who think in Windows often don’t understand the “complex,” and “feature drought” UI that makes OS X. You can do _anything_ from Windows in OS X, it may just not be the default behavior. Making a window fullscreen. Is this seriously why OS X sucks? The default behavior is often to make the window as wide as necessary to fit all the content without needing scrollbars. This is generally what one seeks by “maximizing” anyway. Email clients are personal preference. I prefer lightweight, _fast_ and feature complete (for my needs). Mail.app delivers on those requirements.

Continue your completely ignorant bashing … *now*

I use Mail and iPhoto and consider them competent enough to do the job - i.e. read email and manage photos. iTunes is also the best music manager on any platform, IMHO.

But there are some Apple applications you missed:

Shake - video compositing system considered to be the industry leader and used in many, many film production pipelines (Lord of the Rings, for one)

Final Cut - video editing suite considered one of the best in the industry, used in many production pipelines

Logic - music production suite, condsidered - blah blah, well you get the point.

Whatever you think about their bundled/free software, you have to admit that their Pro application are widely acknowledged to be great software.

Yeah, forget bots, I think you’re right: there are people who automatically vote ‘up’ when they see a Mac story that looks moderately reputable. I couldn’t believe what a piece of junk that story was. It was laughable!

Meanwhile, this story I found about Vladimir Putin and Cthulu has zero points! Vladimir Putin answered questions about *Cthulu* at an Internet conference, and the one person who bothered to vote on the story voted it DOWN! I will never understand Reddit.

I totally agree. Oooh, it resizes the date, woohoo. Let me give you a very obvious example of why I dislike OS:X (the example is annoying, but indicative of greater design decisions). Open Safari and try to find the Javascript Console. What? You can’t? Now google about it. Oh, if I open the terminal and run a command-line script, I can enable the hidden developer menu. Yay, Javascript Console. Now try to use that console to determine what is going wrong with your js. What’s this? ‘Syntax Error - Line 0′ That’s about the most explanative error they can come up with. It’s sad they could make IE’s debugging tools seem so great by comparison. It must’ve really taken effort to do that so poorly. I could point out other annoyances (like getting iTunes to encode in mp3 instead of m4a… my wife, who has used Macs her whole life, couldn’t even find it. It took me several minutes of digging through menus and dialogs to find it tucked away out of sight. It should be one of the most prominent options for a music encoding program).

I modded it up. I read the article. I learned something, albeit something that doesn’t really matter to my day-to-day life. I thought it was an interesting metaphor. I think those of you living in Windows are missing out on a much more pleasant digital experience. And so, I guess, do 183 other people. But I’m sure we’re all just wrong.

I am an OS X user and I’m very satisfied with my experience - yet I could still see that the article you refer to was IDIOTIC in the extreme. I am not bashing Apple (or Windows), I am just saying that, no matter how much you love or hate Apple, no one can reasonably argue that the Wired article was worthwhile. It was embarassing to read, like when you see a teenage boy getting shot down by a girl he likes - you just want to curl up somewhere and hide. That’s how the Wired article made me feel.

I too cant stand the almost religious overtones that float around anything mac-related. I own a mac, an older G4 based iBook which I love. I think its probably the best laptop I’ve owned (out of four). Its not the lightest, or the fastest, but it gets great battery life, has one of the better overall operating systems (I use Linux as my main os, game on windows, but I’d run OSX on my desktop if you COULD game on it).

However, most of the Mac’s default applications suck. Safari is bloated, slow, and still renders many pages terribly. Opera is far superior, and even Firefox is better (tho Camino is more apt on the Mac) in terms of extensions, standard supports, etc.

In terms of messaging, yes Adium doesnt have video but its far superior in terms of buddy list management, configurability, and in my case stability. iChat just plain crashes.

And as to iTunes being the best manager? Hardly. It chokes on collections of 10,000 songs, its UI is very limiting, and fails to support almost any other player. Amarok on linux is probably the best all around music manager you can find. On Windows, WMP11 actually is pretty comparable to iTunes (on Windows atleast) and Foobar2000 is drastically superior, but held down by the simple interface.

Truely, the only great applications Mac has are the ones it bought third-party. Like Shakes, Logic, etc.

The only really nice home-grown app it has is Garageband.

Make a Digital film for a few hundred bucks…

Now that the cost of prosumer and consumer electronics has fallen, most people can now afford to make their own home or independent film movies. Whether you just intend to post to a popular video hosting site such as U-Tube, Myspace or Google Video or …
