I am guilty of it as well, but to avoid repetition, writers will often use synonyms. Avoiding repetition is perhaps the one case in which I don’t mind the use of synonyms. However, once you start, it seems hard to stop, and every word I type has an itch to be changed to some other seemingly more fancy word.
I must stop this.
This blog is stupid.
This blog is dumb.
This blog is daft.
This blog is dense.
This blog is doltish.
This blog is feeble.
They all more or less mean the same. Sure, some are more appropriate than others, and in some cases, there is the perfect, succinct, and ideal word to use. In most cases, what’s simple is true.
I don’t want to keep a separate browser window open to dictionary.com just to read your blog. I should not impose the same nonsense on my readers. In the end, this blog is stupid, and I am sure you don’t need a dictionary on hand to figure that out.
